Flying to Tonga and Flights to the Islands
THE Fua'amotu International Airport is located on the main island of Tongatapu in the Kingdom of Tonga. The domestic airport is a short drive from the international terminal but shares the same runway.
The main airlines providing international flights to Tonga are Air New Zealand, Pacific Blue (Virgin), Air Pacific and Polynesian Airlines. The domestic flights are operated by Chathams Pacific, with regular flights to Ha'apai and Vava'u. From Vava'u there is a once weekly flight to Niuatoputapu in the extreme north of Tonga. There is also a very short flight to the island of 'Eua off the east coast of Tongatapu.
It is about 20 minutes drive into the capital of Nuku'Alofa. There are taxis available as well as hire cars via Avis, who have an office at the International Terminal. Please note that speed limits are strictly adhered to, 40 km/h through towns and villages, 60 km/h elsewhere except for part of the journey to the airport, which is 65 km/h. Watch for the signs. Most resorts provide airport transfers and you usually arrange this at the time of your accommodation booking.
Flights to Vava'u, Ha'apai, Niuatoputapu or 'Eua are via the domestic terminal. You need to drive from the International round to Domestic. Domestic flights are operated via Chathams Pacific - the Friendly Airline.
